PCB gerber files
Gerber is a file format commonly used in PCB industry. This is a common and basic knowledge for the people in PCB fields, but it may not be familiar for any one. So here SDY provides more information about PCB gerber files.
The Gerber file format was originally developed by the Gerber Systems Corp., a division of Gerber Scientific, founded by Joseph Gerber. The Gerber file format is now owned by Ucamco through its acquisition of Barco ETS, a company that previously acquired Gerber Systems Corp. The specification can be freely downloaded.
The gerber data essentially takes all the information about your board and breaks it up by layer. Each layer turns into a single file. The data in the file can then be used to plot the information in order to construct the circuit board. These files will guide a pcb manufacturer exactly how to build your circuit board, and drive the machines involved to manufacture circuit boards. So the gerber data reduces the mistakes caused by reading or converting the files.
Moreover, the gerber data are easily readable in 2D format. It has a feature that what you made is what you saw. You can check the PCB information and find out mistakes easily.
The gerber data is broken up by layer, each file relates to a layer. Usually the unit files are named by below suffix.
- GBL – Gerber Bottom Layer
- GTL – Gerber Top Layer
- GBS – Gerber Bottom Solder Resist
- GTS – Gerber Top Solder Resist
- GBO – Gerber Bottom Overlay
- GTO – Gerber Top Overlay
- GBP – Gerber Bottom Paste
- GTP – Gerber Top Paste
- GKO – Gerber Keep-Out Layer
- GM1 – Gerber Mechanical 1
- GM2 – Gerber Mechanical 2
- GPT – Gerber Top Pad Master
- GPB – Gerber Bottom Pad Master
